Statement
One of my earliest interests In photography was exploring Britain’s rich and varied industrial heritage -the slate quarries of the Welsh mountains, the copper mines of the Lake District and the lead mines of Swaledale.
Returning to photography after a break of several years I found myself quickly drawn back to these landscapes. Although now armed with a more informed mind, I quickly began to realise that these landscapes of industrial dereliction presented an interesting juxtaposition between being areas of dereliction whilst possessing a strong sense of identity and a scenic attraction that goes beyond the traditional notions of scenic beauty.
I thus set out to explore this issue through a series of images of the South Pennines landscape, a landscape that is defined not just by its past industrial heritage but also by evidence of agricultural abandonment and subsequent dereliction. This landscape of abandonment became the main theme of interest for this project.
